Ashlyns School New Toilets, Berkhamsted
As part of Ashlyns School’s expansion works, the School wished to re-locate the four toilet blocks within the school. The existing toilets had remained unchanged since the building’s construction in the 1930s and their location and layout made supervision extremely difficult, giving rise to frequent vandalism and bullying.
The school’s vision was as far as possible to have the toilets opening directly off circulation routes, and this was achieved in the context of this listed building by creating alcoves (each centred on an existing window) off the school’s extensive corridors, with the toilet cubicles (equipped with individual basins and hand-dryers), fronted by oak panelling to match the oak joinery used elsewhere in the building.
